At Cornelius Vermuyden School, our mission is to provide a planned, coherent careers programme that supports every student from Year 7 to Year 11. We ensure our guidance is impartial, ambitious, and tailored to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND or from disadvantaged backgrounds.

This information is reviewed annually to ensure it meets the latest statutory requirements and reflects the local labor market.

The Cornelius Vermuyden "Careers Journey"

We follow a progressive roadmap designed to build student confidence and workplace readiness year-on-year.

  • Year 7: Awareness – Building self-awareness and curiosity about the world of work.

  • Year 8: Exploration – Linking subjects to real-world careers, with a focus on STEM.

  • Year 9: Decision-making – Using Labor Market Information (LMI) to make informed GCSE choices.

  • Year 10: Experience – Developing professional behaviors through sustained Work Experience.

  • Year 11: Transition – Developing interview skills and securing successful Post-16 placements.

 

Measuring our Impact

  •  We evaluate our careers provision against the Gatsby Benchmarks annually.
  • We track student intended destinations of Year 11 and actual destinations after Year 11.

  • We gather student feedback following activities.

  • We monitor participation in work experience and careers events.

  • Governors receive annual reports on careers provision and outcomes.

   

Access for students, Parents, and Employers

  • Pupils access careers guidance through lessons, assemblies, workshops, employer encounters and one-to-one guidance interviews.

  • Parents and carers can access information via this page, weekly newsletter, or contact the Careers Leader through the school office.

  • Teachers support the programme through curriculum links and enrichment activities.

 Student Entitlement

In line with the Baker Clause, all students in Years 8–11 are entitled to:

  • Find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeship opportunities.

  • Hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer through events like assemblies, group discussions, and taster sessions.

  • Understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.


 Opportunities for Engagement

We welcome providers at various points throughout the year, including:

  • Annual Careers Fair: Our primary event for all year groups to meet external partners.

  • 1:1 Sessions: Targeted meetings for students and their parents.

  • KS4 Events: Specifically for Year 10 and 11 focused on post-16 applications.


Premises and Facilities

The school will provide a suitable space (such as the main hall, large classrooms, or offices) and audio-visual equipment (laptop and projector) to support provider presentations. Safeguarding checks will be carried out in line with school policy for all visiting speakers.
